This article answers two common questions:

  • Where is the best place to buy a Sony camera?
  • Is it true you get a free extended warranty when buying from the official Sony Store?

I have personally used the methods in this article to purchase Sony mirrorless cameras:

  • α7C II: effectively ¥236,600 + 3-year manufacturer warranty
  • RX1R III: effectively ¥528,177 + 3-year wide warranty (saving approx. ¥130,000 off the ¥658,900 retail price)
After factoring in the shareholder discount coupon cost and various cashback amounts, the effective price was approx. ¥236,600.

Anyone can use these methods to buy a Sony camera at a significant discount.

This article covers two things:

  1. The most cost-effective way to buy — method and steps explained
  2. Things to note before and after purchase

The Sony Store Is the Best Place to Buy Sony Cameras

The cheapest way to buy a Sony camera is to buy from the Sony Store. New products in particular are often at their lowest price here. And you also get a free 3-year manufacturer warranty.

For example, the lowest price for the α7C II on kakaku.com was ¥246,530 (as of March 2025), while my purchase price was effectively approx. ¥236,600 + 3-year warranty. On price alone, the Sony Store wins.

How to Buy Sony Mirrorless Cameras at a Discount

The key is to stack four discounts:

  • Shareholder discount coupon: 15% OFF (or standard 10% OFF if unavailable)
  • Affiliated card payment: 3% OFF, plus 0.5% cashback with Sony Bank WALLET
  • Lucky draw shopping coupons (¥4,000 to up to ¥100,000)
  • Via Rakuten Rebates: 1% in Rakuten Points

1. Use a Shareholder Discount Coupon for 15% OFF

The biggest single discount at the Sony Store is the shareholder discount coupon. The going rate on Yahoo! Auctions (as of March 2025) is around ¥4,000. It used to be available on Rakuma and Mercari too, but listings seem to have dried up there.

Since the gap between the shareholder 15% and the standard 10% is 5%, any purchase of around ¥140,000 or more means the coupon pays for itself. I paid ¥5,900 for mine when I bought the α7C II.

5% of the list price (¥295,900) is ¥14,795, so after subtracting the coupon cost I came out ¥8,895 ahead compared to using the standard 10% coupon.

¥295,000 → ¥251,515 — a 15% discount applied.

If you can get a shareholder coupon, it is well worth trying.

If that feels like too much effort, the standard 10% OFF coupon is also a solid option. It is available to everyone with a SONY ID — new and existing users alike.

2. Pay with an Affiliated Card for 3% OFF + 0.5% Cashback

Paying with a Sony Store affiliated card gives 3% off the listed price.

The two affiliated cards are:

I recommend the Sony Bank WALLET:

  • Free to use (the Sony Card has an annual fee)
  • 0.5% cashback on Sony Bank WALLET purchases

The combined 3.5% may seem small, but on a high-priced purchase it adds up. On my α7C II, including the 0.5% cashback, total savings came to approx. ¥8,900. The more expensive the item, the bigger the benefit.

Apply for Sony Bank WALLET at the Sony Bank website.

3. Enter the Lucky Draw for Coupons Worth ¥4,000–¥100,000

On top of the 15% or 10% coupon, you can also use shopping coupons won in the periodically held Lucky Draw.

It runs multiple times a year and is easy to enter. There are no blank prizes — everyone wins at least ¥4,000. Always enter when it is running.

Enter via the Sony official website.

4. Go Through Rakuten Rebates for 1% in Rakuten Points

Rakuten Rebates earns you Rakuten Points just for shopping through their links — a simple way to collect points with no extra effort.

Go to the Sony Store page on Rakuten Rebates and click through to the Sony Store from there.

Points are awarded a few months after purchase — mine arrived about two months later.

The Sony Store Warranty Is Another Big Advantage

Beyond price, there are other advantages to buying from the Sony Store:

  • Manufacturer warranty automatically extended from 1 year to 3 years at no extra cost
  • Access to exclusive coupons and shopping vouchers

The 3-year warranty covers defects and malfunctions. I personally had the α6400 repaired under this warranty — it is genuinely reassuring.

A paid Wide Warranty is also available, covering accidental damage such as drops. You can choose 3-year or 5-year coverage.

For full details, check the official Sony website.

[Summary] The Sony Store Is the Best Place to Buy Sony Cameras

To recap, stack these four discounts at the Sony Store:

  • Shareholder discount coupon: 15% OFF
  • Affiliated card payment: 3% OFF + 0.5% cashback with Sony Bank WALLET
  • Shopping coupons (¥4,000 to up to ¥100,000)

On price, warranty, and perks combined, the Sony Store is my top recommendation.

I hope this helps you find your perfect camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get a shareholder discount coupon?

Search for "Sony 株主優待" on Yahoo! Auctions. They typically sell for ¥3,000–¥5,000. They used to appear on Mercari and Rakuma too, but are now rarely listed there.

Which is better — 10% OFF or 15% OFF?

If your purchase is ¥140,000 or more, the 15% coupon pays for itself and then some. For a camera body, the 15% option is almost always the better deal.

How quickly can I get a Sony Bank WALLET?

You need to open a Sony Bank account first. Applications are online, but card delivery can take 1–2 weeks. Apply early if you have a purchase planned.

When does the Lucky Draw take place?

Several times a year, on an irregular schedule. Sign up for the Sony Store newsletter to get notified so you never miss it.

What if kakaku.com shows a lower price?

Newly released products are often cheapest at the Sony Store, but over time third-party prices may drop lower. Factor in the 3-year warranty, coupons, and points — the Sony Store usually wins on total value.
